In and Out Thai Noodle Bar: A Love Affair

It began innocently as these things often do, with empty cupboards and a craving for something delicious yet comforting to take my hunger pangs away. As a busy woman who loves her food but has little time to cook, I’d ordered my fair share of takeaway cuisine and had been more or less satisfied with the results. And then In and Out Noodle Bar happened. I had found ‘The One’.

Tom Kha kicked things off, the fragrance of aromatic ingredients filling the air as I savoured the mellowing effect a dash of coconut milk brings to this famous sweet, salty and sour Thai soup.  Next I dove into a Chicken Larb and, expecting the same straight forward combination of mince chicken and herbs, I was unprepared for the delightful hit of lime and authentic roasted rice which crunched pleasantly between my teeth, lifting the dish to a higher plane.  Alternating between this, fluffy Jasmine rice and a holy basil and chilli vegetable stir fry aka Pad Kra Prao, I felt a pang of regret that I hadn’t discovered this gem of culinary Thai delights sooner. Top 5 Food Trends for 2012

Crevat on, discerning food critic face ready, it’s time to talk food trends for 2012.

2011 came and went with a number of new trends in Australia; South American food made its mark, hyper-local produce became and still remains popular, and for the ultra-niche artisan ice popsicles seemed to appear in every pop-up café and in the freezers of every hipster household. The beauty of the culinary industry is that food trends never stay the same for too long and this year a new wave of food trends have emerged and will change the way we dine. The top 5 are as follows:

1. Street food

food trends - food truck

Giving the term fast food a whole new literal meaning- mobile food trucks have already taken off in New York, LA and London and they are being introduced here in the hope they will be just as popular. None of this dodgy hot dogs or kebabs like the old days, truck vendors are creating gourmet cuisine such as Pulled Pork Tacos, Roasted Duck Buns and Wagyu Beef Meatballs. Eating on the street just got fancy! Food trends like this might take a bit longer to really make their mark, but this is one which will surely grow over the next few years. (more…)

No magic required, April finds her takeaway superhero

Our guest post today comes from April who creates the wonderful Sydney food blog Polkadots and Chopsticks.

You know after a long day at work, 90% of the time you just want to come home and have dinner appear from nowhere. Well unfortunately I didn’t get a letter when I turned 10 telling me I’m a wizard, so I’ve had to find alternatives to dinner with no effort.

So the answer? Take away!

But like everyone else I’m so bored of generic pizza delivery. Discovering Delivery Hero though has opened so many more options. I’m particularly partial to Asian cuisines. First appearances were great, the site runs smoothly and the design is modern and fun, making the only difficult part of the whole process trying to decide what to eat! Take a (Food) Picture – It’ll Last Longer

or ‘Eat it Don’t Tweet it’

It’s a guilty obsession, and it’s always the same. We all go out to eat at a nice restaurant. We order the fish, or pasta, or tofu. The plates are set down in front of us. Nobody move. First we have to get a picture of that beautiful spread.

The right angle, rotated 30 degrees. Perfect. Click. Now dig in.

And we’re not alone in our food picture obsession. This lends itself to a number of good quality food photo apps that cater to non-pro food bloggers like us, letting us share and show-off our adventures in gastronomy. There’s SnapDish, Instagram, Foodspotting, fidd.me, and as of last week Platter. Not to mention the more traditional mediums like Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest which are awash with images of beautiful (and sometimes highly unphotogenic) food getups cramming our stream. There’s even a study out about online food and photos sharing trends by 360i, which examines why so many of us are snap happy at the dinner table and what happens to our food pics.

But why do most people (food lovers, but non-pro food reviewers or bloggers) feel the desire to record adventures in gastronomy? And does it take away from the experience? (more…)

Easter Traditions From Around the World

Whether you celebrate Easter religiously or just enjoy the festivities, it’s one of the world’s favourite and most widely-varied holiday seasons. For some it means fasting and fish, while for others it’s all about (expensive!) show-bags and chocolate eggs. Delivery Hero shares some of the interesting Easter traditions and food that different cultures use to celebrate this special time of year:

Spanish Easter Traditions

It’s widely known that the Spanish know how to party, and that belief is confirmed by their cheerful Holy Thursday Easter tradition known as the ‘Dance of the Dead’. “Forget bunny rabbits”, say the Spaniards – the best way to revere the Lord is to play out scenes from ‘The Passion’ (not the Mel Gibson movie) with everyone dressed up as skeletons while parading through the town. At some point someone must have mentioned that dressing up as the living dead wasn’t reverent enough, so they make sure that the animated corpses carry boxes of ashes and dance for 3 hours into the early morning (Sydney-siders might know this tradition as ‘a night in Kings Cross’). Easter Feast-er

That’s right, terrible puns and all it is almost Easter time! The one of many historically religious holidays in Australia, that has been hijacked in modern times and transformed into a weekend of food worshipping.

Easter egg hunt

The very same holiday which leaves us all scratching our heads wondering how chocolate eggs relate to the resurrection and how images of bunny’s and baby animals relate to our now encroaching Autumn.

Still, this is not to say some of our Easter traditions aren’t enormous amounts of fun. Following the Easter bunny’s trail and searching for the chocolate stash before your sibling’s steal it all-was always the highlight of Easter Sunday for me.

So to celebrate the spirit of the great Easter egg hunt, we have put our own DH spin on things.

Take a look at the map of Sydney CBD and follow the trail to lead you to some of the tastiest Restaurants offering home delivery in the city.
