Delivery Hero: One Year on

Can you believe Delivery Hero is one year old already?! Our caped crusader skipped the training wheels and got straight to work bringing you the freshest sushi, tastiest pizza and top-notch takeaway in Australia. We’re proud to say that Delivery Hero is definitely fulfilling his mission to change the nature of online food delivery for the better! And we couldn’t have done it without you!

Here at Delivery Hero HQ, it’s clear that we’re all a little obsessed with food, superheroes (did somebody mention lycra?), light adventure sports and office pranks. To celebrate our first birthday, we thought we’d give you a bit of a breakdown of some Delivery Hero stats and facts.

Number of meals delivered: over 100,000!

Number of restaurants: over 1,000

Busiest public holiday to order takeaway: New Year’s Day (somebody’s got to feed you, while you nurse last year’s hangover)

We threw a party- any guesses what kind it was?

If you guessed a crazy karaoke costume party then you sound awesome and we should go out some time, but you would also be wrong. The DH night out was celebrated in the only way we really know how, with a huge magnificent dinner party!

Delivery Hero Party Insieme Wood Fired Pizza

During the evening while the plates were arriving to the table and the wine was flowing freely (someone knocked a bottle over), this roving photographer thought it could be the perfect time to catch some of the team out with some sneaky embarrassing shots to show you all. You know the kind- eyes half open, awkward lean, photobombed etc. etc. (more…)

Best Beers to Drink with Takeaway Food

For centuries foodies and gourmands have taken great pleasure in pairing the finest wines with the most exquisite cuisines, and no wonder – a complimentary drop can add a whole new level of flavour and body to a meal. But what about beer? With boutique breweries popping up in virtually every area of the world, it’s about time that we started taking the amber fluid seriously as a way to enhance the flavours of a delicious dining experience, so Delivery Hero has done the (naturally) heroic thing and come up with a list of the best Australian beers to match with takeaway cuisine from around the world!

Best Beers to drink with takeaways

Type of Takeaway – Thai

Restaurant – @Home Thai

Cuisine – Pad Thai   A favourite Thai fried Rice Noodle with Egg, Tofu, Bean Sprouts & Peanuts

Type of Beer – Pilsner

Boutique Beer option – Hix Pilsner   Hix Pilsner is a German-style pilsener made from both local and imported malted grains. It has a subtle aroma, a light bready / cracker-like taste and a dash of bitterness and floral flavours. Add in a high-level of carbonation and this is a perfect brew for a Pad Thai.

Mainstream Beer option – Coopers 62 Pilsner   The Coopers 62 brings a golden colour and dense, rich head. Hopped using a combo of Saaz and Hersbrucker varieties, the flavour is medium-bodied and the 62 is well-fermented to produce a nicely balanced pilsner that sits next to a plate of Pad Thai like they were meant to be together. In and Out Thai Noodle Bar: A Love Affair

It began innocently as these things often do, with empty cupboards and a craving for something delicious yet comforting to take my hunger pangs away. As a busy woman who loves her food but has little time to cook, I’d ordered my fair share of takeaway cuisine and had been more or less satisfied with the results. And then In and Out Noodle Bar happened. I had found ‘The One’.

Tom Kha kicked things off, the fragrance of aromatic ingredients filling the air as I savoured the mellowing effect a dash of coconut milk brings to this famous sweet, salty and sour Thai soup.  Next I dove into a Chicken Larb and, expecting the same straight forward combination of mince chicken and herbs, I was unprepared for the delightful hit of lime and authentic roasted rice which crunched pleasantly between my teeth, lifting the dish to a higher plane.  Alternating between this, fluffy Jasmine rice and a holy basil and chilli vegetable stir fry aka Pad Kra Prao, I felt a pang of regret that I hadn’t discovered this gem of culinary Thai delights sooner. Meet a Hero: Piotr (and his amazing cupcakes!)

The next Hero to have a chat with us is one of the newest additions to the Delivery Hero Australia team. Piotr Stanis has only been with us a few short weeks, but he has already become an extremely well liked and valuable team member- and it’s not just because he has been known to come into the office bearing gifts of coffee and cupcakes. Though let’s be real, it seriously helps.

“Hgh peewtper,” Sorry, just had to finish that last piece of cupcake. Let me try again-

Meet a hero: Piotr Stanis

Hey Piotr! I know you are busy so thanks for taking a minute to chat, could you tell me a bit about yourself?

Originally, I am from Poland but I lived in Sydney for quite some time. I love Sydney – Sydney ROCKS! I love multicultural aspect of living in Australia, socialising and working with many people from all over the world. Delivery Hero office is no different; we have truly international crew of Heroes with everyone bringing something unique to the team. That is why we are the winners! I have degrees in Multimedia and Marketing and Delivery Hero allows me to put all that knowledge to the test. (more…)

Delivery Hero office lunches

When we are not ordering food to the office for lunch, here at Delivery Hero we often venture out to our neighbouring suburbs to test out local restaurants or just head to the park when the weather decides not to be a raining (a rare occasion this summer!)

Delivery Hero office lunch 2
Inside, outside, restaurant or office- it doesn’t matter, as long as there is plenty of good food we are happy.
So what are our requirements for a good office lunch? I’m glad you asked. You didn’t? I must be hearing things. Well just read on anyway!

The food has to be fresh. It’s bad enough the sandwiches you make from home when you are trying to be good and save money are always soggy and flat by the time you get to them at midday- this cannot happen at a restaurant. Automatic deal breaker.

Lots of choice. We like to eat together often in a big group, so it’s important that there is enough of a range for all of us, and yes that even means the vego’s, the diet conscious, and the allergy prone. (more…)

Delivery Hero ‘delivering happiness’ at a whole new level

On the 15th of Februrary, one day after the most romantic day of the year, Stewart, with the help of our website constructed a completely original and truly post-modern take on a marriage proposal to his long-time girlfriend.

Delivery Hero Proposal
Using an online ‘menu’ he created for a fictional restaurant, Stewart directed his girlfriend to the Delivery Hero website and asked her to check out some new place which had just been listed- then she had to choose from a number of romantic gestures with the final question being the big one…
YES. or NO.

She made her choice and Stewart was left waiting, until the order was received in the Customer Care office here at D.H Headquarters.  And there it was. The answer Stewart had been waiting for- YES!

DH is taking its’ motto “Delivering Happiness” to a whole new level!  We caught up with Stewart to tell us the whole story. (more…)

Meet a Hero: Alexandra, Lead Research

meet a hero

Hey Alex, You look busy so thanks for taking a minute to chat, could you tell me a bit about yourself?
Hey! A bit about myself… But so much to say! Haha I am from France, which you could believe would differentiate me from other people, but not at Delivery Hero! I graduated in business and came to Australia 6 months ago to travel (yay!) and work (yay…), and 3 months ago, I became a hero and started delivering happiness!

What’s your role here at Delivery Hero?
I am in charge of lead research, I am also in charge of menu collection, which is pretty much self-explanatory! And finally, I make it my mission to spread my awesomeness in the office, because, let’s face it: who else could do it?? :p

And what were you doing previously to working at Delivery Hero?
I studied business and specialised in market research from a business school in the south of France (Bordeaux, great city, lots of good wines… and other stuff!). Had a couple of experiences in the corporate world (interesting part of my student life…), spent a semester in the United States (BEST part of my student life!), and decided to do something a bit crazy before settling in France. Conclusion: Here I am, in Sydney, enjoying the good life!

Can you tell me one interesting story you’ve had since working here…
Giving a specific story is difficult, because we have a lot of fun at the office (and occasionally work… hum). At the beginning of December, thanks to a colleague, a couple of us went surfing, it was the first (and last? haha) time for me, apparently I am not a natural, who would have thought???

Now it’s time to divulge! Tell us something we don’t know about you.
Huh, something you don’t know… I don’t know how to snap my fingers!! But I have really cool colleagues who are helping me overcome this obstacle… When they are not making fun of me!

What’s your favourite food and your favourite restaurant to order from in the city?
My favourite food: Pizza! Favourite place so far: Casa Messina in Leichhardt, almost as good as the pizzas my father cooks!

Happy New Year!

happynewyear2012Goodbye 2011- Hello a brand new year promising to be even better than the last -Unless the Mayan’s were right all along, in which case the end of the world is neigh and you should be running off to some remote island to enjoy what time we have left immediately!

For the rest of us slightly less dramatic people, let me take the time to say welcome back to the real world! The past two weeks have been a fantastic whirlwind of celebrations and sunburn, but we have made it to the other side and here at Delivery Hero we are energized to make this year our best yet!
If Christmas is about giving and being with our friends and family, then surely New Years is all about you! Setting your resolutions, planning your year and buying your gym membership which you swear you will use this time!
Well we are no different. Our New Year’s Resolution is all about YOU as well.
This year we will be working to grow our website for you, make sure all your favourite restaurants are here and make sure our customer service rocks. We love any feedback and are more than happy to have a chat anytime – just call: 1300 MY MEAL.
Remember, we are here to work hard and to make sure things keep getting better and better – kinda like a Gym membership, but way more fun!
