Did the British Invent Curry?

shutterstock_46868356The mighty curry has been gracing takeaway menus for decades now. Butter Chicken, Tandoori and Vindaloo are all mouth-watering terms that have come to represent Indian cuisine in the wider world. But there’s a deeper and more multi-layered history behind the intricate blend of ingredients that make up the much-loved curry.

At Delivery Hero we’re passionate about food, and so we’ve delved into the rich past of Indian cuisine to find out what separates a Biryani from a Dose, discover if it was actually the Brits that introduced curry to Indian cuisine, and give you a rundown of the best Indian restaurants in the town. Let’s explore further…  (more…)

Finding a Good Restaurant Name in Brisbane

Finding a name for a new restaurant isn’t easy – the pressure to come up with a killer tag is huge, and a particular name could make you – or break you (see: The Golden Shower in Tanzania, Big Wong in New York and Pu Pu Hot Pot in Massachusetts for examples). That’s probably why, when restaurateurs are choosing names for their establishments, they seem to go for a few main (and safe) categories: the groan-worthy puntastic, some sort of inane food reference, or an iconic motif. While we were having a gander at a few of our favourite places to eat in Bris-vegas, we noticed that they all had something in common: they’ve gone with an iconic motif in their names. Let’s investigate further… (more…)

Weird and Strange Restaurants from around the World

It would be an understatement to say that chefs and restaurateurs are quirky people. If you’ve ever worked at a restaurant – even as a Barista at a cafe – you have first hand experience with the madness. In front of the customers it’s usually all business, forced rapport and big smiles, but we know that behind-the-scenes you have to deal with a Tom Cruise-level personality who would be hilarious if only you weren’t Katie Holmes-level concerned for your personal safety on a daily basis.

Crazy Chef

You’re late for your shift! P.s. I love you.

Usually the ‘quirkiness’ never makes its way into the character of the restaurant itself, but – when it does…well, see for yourself as we investigate some weird and strange restaurants from around the world:

Modern Toilet – Taiwan, Japan & Hong Kong

Everyone eats, everyone goes to the toilet: fact. Ex-banker Wang Zi-Wei must have had these two nuggets of priceless information flying around his head when he had an earth-shattering epiphany; why not combine the two? Usually pitching this idea to investors would lead to an awkward silence followed by a distinct lack of start-up capital, but luckily Mr. Zi-Wei had already received positive reviews from a previous venture that sold ice-cream served in mini-toilets. Yes, you read that correctly. Enter ‘Modern Toilet’, a concept so popular in Asia that it has become a franchise with restaurants in Hong-Kong, Japan and Taiwan. Foodie Heaven: Melbourne Good Food & Wine Show

Aussies are a little obsessed with food these days. Whether it’s food blogs, TV shows or the lure of celebrity chefs, we’re all a little transfixed by fancy cupcakes, Wagyu beef burgers, food trucks, boutique beer and seasonal produce. If you’ve dusted off your apron and sharpened your knives, but need a little push (or a dollop of inspiration), head to the Melbourne Good Food & Wine Show from 1-3 June.

For those interested in furthering their culinary education, head to the Flavour Workshop hosted by Oxford Landing Estates winemaker, Matt Pick, and Maggie Beer’s chef, Chris Wotton. Under their guidance you’ll find out how to pair wines with particular ingredients – what works, what doesn’t, and why. Easter Traditions From Around the World

Whether you celebrate Easter religiously or just enjoy the festivities, it’s one of the world’s favourite and most widely-varied holiday seasons. For some it means fasting and fish, while for others it’s all about (expensive!) show-bags and chocolate eggs. Delivery Hero shares some of the interesting Easter traditions and food that different cultures use to celebrate this special time of year:

Spanish Easter Traditions

It’s widely known that the Spanish know how to party, and that belief is confirmed by their cheerful Holy Thursday Easter tradition known as the ‘Dance of the Dead’. “Forget bunny rabbits”, say the Spaniards – the best way to revere the Lord is to play out scenes from ‘The Passion’ (not the Mel Gibson movie) with everyone dressed up as skeletons while parading through the town. At some point someone must have mentioned that dressing up as the living dead wasn’t reverent enough, so they make sure that the animated corpses carry boxes of ashes and dance for 3 hours into the early morning (Sydney-siders might know this tradition as ‘a night in Kings Cross’). Easter Feast-er

That’s right, terrible puns and all it is almost Easter time! The one of many historically religious holidays in Australia, that has been hijacked in modern times and transformed into a weekend of food worshipping.

Easter egg hunt

The very same holiday which leaves us all scratching our heads wondering how chocolate eggs relate to the resurrection and how images of bunny’s and baby animals relate to our now encroaching Autumn.

Still, this is not to say some of our Easter traditions aren’t enormous amounts of fun. Following the Easter bunny’s trail and searching for the chocolate stash before your sibling’s steal it all-was always the highlight of Easter Sunday for me.

So to celebrate the spirit of the great Easter egg hunt, we have put our own DH spin on things.

Take a look at the map of Sydney CBD and follow the trail to lead you to some of the tastiest Restaurants offering home delivery in the city.

Fillies, Fashion and FOOD- It’s Melbourne Cup time!

The race that stops the nation is upon us again! The only day other than ANZAC Day where placing a bet in the middle of a working day in not only acceptable, it is practically mandatory.

A day when all eyes are on 24 horses as they hurdle down the track with little men clinging onto their backs hoping to cross the line first. When us girls get to dress up-only to complain about how sore our feet are in our heels ten minutes later and when we can unashamedly sip champagne before midday- Hooray!

For most of us though, Melbourne Cup is celebrated in the office with sweeps and a chance to step away from the computer for a moment and hope our $2 bet will be the lucky one this year. Without a doubt nibbles and finger food are also a must for any office party, so we’ve put together a list of some great options to make sure your party has the best odds come Melbourne Cup day.

Seafood- Whether it is Prawns, Oysters or Calamari, seafood is a classic choice for the (hopefully) warm Aussie November weather.

Rice Paper Rolls- Easy to eat, healthy and so delicious. What’s not to love!

Sandwiches- Underrated for yummy snack foods, make them with smoked salmon, roast beef, chicken… the possibilities are limitless.

Dumplings- Get an assortment to share for a Chinese favourite.

Sushi- Seriously, is there ever a wrong time for Sushi?

So what are you waiting for? Avoid the hassles, ignore the neigh-sayers and trot over to DeliveryHero.com.au  now and let us help turn your Melbourne Cup party into a Galloping Success!
