Did the British Invent Curry?

shutterstock_46868356The mighty curry has been gracing takeaway menus for decades now. Butter Chicken, Tandoori and Vindaloo are all mouth-watering terms that have come to represent Indian cuisine in the wider world. But there’s a deeper and more multi-layered history behind the intricate blend of ingredients that make up the much-loved curry.

At Delivery Hero we’re passionate about food, and so we’ve delved into the rich past of Indian cuisine to find out what separates a Biryani from a Dose, discover if it was actually the Brits that introduced curry to Indian cuisine, and give you a rundown of the best Indian restaurants in the town. Let’s explore further…  (more…)

Finding a Good Restaurant Name in Brisbane

Finding a name for a new restaurant isn’t easy – the pressure to come up with a killer tag is huge, and a particular name could make you – or break you (see: The Golden Shower in Tanzania, Big Wong in New York and Pu Pu Hot Pot in Massachusetts for examples). That’s probably why, when restaurateurs are choosing names for their establishments, they seem to go for a few main (and safe) categories: the groan-worthy puntastic, some sort of inane food reference, or an iconic motif. While we were having a gander at a few of our favourite places to eat in Bris-vegas, we noticed that they all had something in common: they’ve gone with an iconic motif in their names. Let’s investigate further… (more…)

Keeping the Kids Entertained: School holiday top tips

School holidays kick off at the end of this week and given the endless rain, no doubt you’ll be looking for some indoor action to keep the ankle-biters entertained. Luckily there are lots of quality options in Sydney to keep boredom at bay and your sanity intact. Here are our top five picks:

Tyrannosaurus by torchlight!

1) Dinosaurs   Who doesn’t like dinosaurs?! Seriously. Here at Delivery Hero, obviously we have a soft spot for caped-crusaders, but dinosaurs are definitely up there. As well as old-skool favourites like Tyrannosaurus Rex and Stegosaurus, the Australian Museum has welcomed a couple of new additions to the family, including the 228-million-year-old Eoraptor – one of the earliest dinosaurs; and the Bambiraptor. Awwwww! Yes, it really is called Bambiraptor, but in contrast to its doe-eyed namesake, this dino-toddler has very sharp, pointy teeth! (more…)

Healthy fast food options

Another issue with eating according to a strict set of rules is that you usually end up eating the same thing everyday at the same time. Sydney Film Festival delivers a cultural feast (plus a little something for your taste buds)

As food lovers, if we’re not making sure it gets to you, here at Delivery Hero, we also like to watch it on the big screen.  There are SOOO many good films out this year and the Sydney Film Festival is bringing them direct to you from 6-17th June. This year’s program features 156 films from 50 countries in 49 languages!

Festival director, Nashen Moody, has put together a diverse program of feature films and documentaries including 22 Australian premières from “Dead Europe” and “Not Suitable for Children”, to “Mabo” (featured in the indigenous Blackfella films program).  Other highlights include the new Wes Anderson flick “Moonrise Kingdom” which looks like a pearler! And then there’s “Beasts of the Southern Wild” by Behn Zeitlin which bagged the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year; and “Bully” a documentary by Lee Hirsch, which follows a few kids and their families in the USA.

This year’s festival also has a special focus on Indian cinema with Anurag Kashyap’s epic “Gangs of Wasseypur“. And by epic, we mean EPIC. It’s in two parts – each weighing in at 160 minutes apiece! You’ll definitely need some sustenance to make it through this gangster tale spanning generations. It’s been described as an Indian mash-up of Tarantino meets “The Godfather”, topped off with a neo-Bollywood soundtrack.

After all that you will be craving an Indian takeaway on your way home, or even better, schedule your order with Delivery Hero ahead of time, so it arrives 10 minutes after you walk in the door.  Our tip would be Maya da Dhaba in Surry Hills. They do a mean Chicken Jhalfrezi, Dal Makhani (lentil dahl) and Punjabi Baingan (baby eggplant with tomato, chilli and coriander), plus a delicious assortment of spiced rice dishes.

entre-les-bras

Alternatively if you’re a hardcore foodie, then sign up for the food + film experience, which features the documentary film “Step Up to the Plate” which follows master French chef Michel Bras and his legendary three-Michelin Star hotel-restaurant. After the screening treat yourself to a 4-course meal inspired by the movie, specially prepared by chef Justin North at Quarter Twenty One, with matching Eden Road wines.

We want to know which films you’re excited about checking out at the Sydney Film Festival, and which dishes you’ll be chowing down on as you debrief.

Best Beers to Drink with Takeaway Food

For centuries foodies and gourmands have taken great pleasure in pairing the finest wines with the most exquisite cuisines, and no wonder – a complimentary drop can add a whole new level of flavour and body to a meal. But what about beer? With boutique breweries popping up in virtually every area of the world, it’s about time that we started taking the amber fluid seriously as a way to enhance the flavours of a delicious dining experience, so Delivery Hero has done the (naturally) heroic thing and come up with a list of the best Australian beers to match with takeaway cuisine from around the world!

Best Beers to drink with takeaways

Type of Takeaway – Thai

Restaurant – @Home Thai

Cuisine – Pad Thai   A favourite Thai fried Rice Noodle with Egg, Tofu, Bean Sprouts & Peanuts

Type of Beer – Pilsner

Boutique Beer option – Hix Pilsner   Hix Pilsner is a German-style pilsener made from both local and imported malted grains. It has a subtle aroma, a light bready / cracker-like taste and a dash of bitterness and floral flavours. Add in a high-level of carbonation and this is a perfect brew for a Pad Thai.

Mainstream Beer option – Coopers 62 Pilsner   The Coopers 62 brings a golden colour and dense, rich head. Hopped using a combo of Saaz and Hersbrucker varieties, the flavour is medium-bodied and the 62 is well-fermented to produce a nicely balanced pilsner that sits next to a plate of Pad Thai like they were meant to be together. Easter Feast-er

That’s right, terrible puns and all it is almost Easter time! The one of many historically religious holidays in Australia, that has been hijacked in modern times and transformed into a weekend of food worshipping.

Easter egg hunt

The very same holiday which leaves us all scratching our heads wondering how chocolate eggs relate to the resurrection and how images of bunny’s and baby animals relate to our now encroaching Autumn.

Still, this is not to say some of our Easter traditions aren’t enormous amounts of fun. Following the Easter bunny’s trail and searching for the chocolate stash before your sibling’s steal it all-was always the highlight of Easter Sunday for me.

So to celebrate the spirit of the great Easter egg hunt, we have put our own DH spin on things.

Take a look at the map of Sydney CBD and follow the trail to lead you to some of the tastiest Restaurants offering home delivery in the city.

Delivery Hero easter hunt

Happy hunting!

As the name suggests, this is the perfect place to start the Easter hunt! It is also a great place for a big tasty breakfast. Grab a toasted Bagel, Bacon and Egg roll or create your own Gourmet sandwich.

2.      Shoyu  Japanese Lunch

Just a few streets up is Shoyu- Japanese cuisine in the city with seriously great prices. Try the Okkonomiyaki, delicious Japanese omlette with seafood and veggies. Or order the Cha Udon- Green Tea noodles served hot or cold.

3.      Made in Italy CBD  Afternoon Snack

Just a Hop, skip and a Jump away is the home of Passione Italiano! A freshly cooked slice of pizza in the afternoon is always a good decision. Why not get stuck into the ‘Australiana’ topped with tomato sauce base, bacon, egg, Mozzarella cheese, oregano, fresh parsley.

4.     Curry At the Rocks  Dinner

Time to get spicy! Fantastic curries, hot and puffy Naan bread, washed down with a Lassi! Or perhaps in honour of Good Friday, try the amazing Bengali fish with coriander, mustard seeds and special spices. Finish your Easter feast, getting cosy and enjoying a delicious Indian banquet.

Book Club saved with home delivery Indian on-the-way!

Community post by Claudia Latvon

Right. First things first, sweep everything on the floor under the couch.  Second, pile all dirty dishes in a cupboard under the sink and hope the cockroaches aren’t too hungry. Third, a quick spray of air freshener and bam- house is ready!

Thursday book club

Thursday nights is book club night- a gathering of my fellow nerdy friends that had grown exponentially in the past few months- and now instead of three of us chatting over wine and crackers, it tended to be a dinner/drinks/room filler of about 20. And as always, the host was expected to cater. Great.

I had enjoyed the kind of day that started with rushed breakfast yoghurt spilt down my freshly washed blouse, and had ended with a dousing of street puddle courtesy of a truck on my walk home. Yep, it was that kind of day! (more…)

It’s Aussie Grand Prix Time!

The annual Aussie Grand Prix to be held in the sports mecca that is Melbourne is soon to be upon us once again. Three days of exhilarating Formula One action will take over the city as the entire Albert Park lake area is given over to the race circuit. With the likes of speed freaks Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, the defending champion Sebastian Vettel and Oz’s very own Mark Webber, as well as the world’s sporting media, all descending on the city, it’s certainly a weekend that puts Melbourne right on the sporting map, and therefore worth celebrating we reckon!

Enjoy the Aussie Grand Prix, Delivery Hero style!

Even if you’re not one of the lucky ones watching from the stands, you’ll still get to sample the atmosphere of the Aussie Grand Prix, not least because the powerful wail of the car engines can be heard city-wide!

So if you’re in Melbourne but don’t have a ticket, we think the best way to take in this seminal event on the Aussie sporting calendar is to get some mates around, order in the best Melbourne home delivery and watch all the action on TV, with the added sound effects from those engines hurtling around the circuit just a few miles away of course.

What’s the best takeaway for such an occasion though? Well we think a good curry always goes down well and we can heartily recommend Jai Ho Indian Restaurant in Richmond for all your spice needs! Choose from classics such as chicken Tikka, fish Masala, prawn curry or beef Vindaloo (for those dare-devils amongst you). There’s also a number of vegetarian options as well as the delicious chef’s special Biryaani (choose between chicken/lamb/beef with basmati rice and flavoured with selected herbs, topped with fresh coriander and fried onion). There’s plenty of naan, roti and salads for a selection of side dishes.  And for when you just can’t choose, check out the chef’s selection value pack which is a steal at only $65.50.

Avoid the traffic and tourist chaos, kick back and watch the Aussie Grand Prix with Delivery Hero!
