The secret of Mum’s cooking

Pssst. You should all know by now that this Sunday is Mother’s Day. But really every day is a good day to appreciate your Mum! She’s the woman who brought you into the world and raised you as the upstanding human beings that you are. Seriously, we have a lot to be thankful for, including our love of food! For most of us that love began at an early age in Mum’s kitchen. Some of those food memories were kick-started with licking the bowl after the chocolate cake went into the oven!

Think about it for sec. Your Mum has cooked literally THOUSANDS of meals for you! She’s made you breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus birthday cakes and desserts! If that’s not worth celebrating, we don’t know what is! Mother’s Day is a time to show your Mum that you care. Hang up her apron, bring her a cup of tea and let her relax. Cook her a special meal or order a takeaway feast!

How to Make Sushi Rolls – A Delivery Hero Guide

How to make Maki Sushi Rolls

The world can be neatly divided into two opposing camps – those who absolutely love sushi, and those who hate it with a passion. For those that don’t like sushi – for those who’ve never known the glorious heat wave that accompanies a mouthful of moist rice, silky salmon and furious wasabi – why don’t you check out some of our other posts, because this Delivery Hero blog post is about to turn into sushi central:)

There are several types of sushi, ranging from Maki sushi (the ‘traditional’ sushi roll), Nigiri sushi (fish on top of a chunk of rice), Uramaki (‘inside out’ sushi with the rice on the outside of the nori), and the Westernized ‘California Roll’ (which doesn’t actually use raw fish). Today we’re going to focus on how to make Maki sushi, so let’s round up the ingredients that we need and get to work… (more…)

Take a (Food) Picture – It’ll Last Longer

or ‘Eat it Don’t Tweet it’

It’s a guilty obsession, and it’s always the same. We all go out to eat at a nice restaurant. We order the fish, or pasta, or tofu. The plates are set down in front of us. Nobody move. First we have to get a picture of that beautiful spread.

The right angle, rotated 30 degrees. Perfect. Click. Now dig in.

And we’re not alone in our food picture obsession. This lends itself to a number of good quality food photo apps that cater to non-pro food bloggers like us, letting us share and show-off our adventures in gastronomy. There’s SnapDish, Instagram, Foodspotting, fidd.me, and as of last week Platter. Not to mention the more traditional mediums like Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest which are awash with images of beautiful (and sometimes highly unphotogenic) food getups cramming our stream. There’s even a study out about online food and photos sharing trends by 360i, which examines why so many of us are snap happy at the dinner table and what happens to our food pics.

But why do most people (food lovers, but non-pro food reviewers or bloggers) feel the desire to record adventures in gastronomy? And does it take away from the experience? (more…)

Easter Traditions From Around the World

Whether you celebrate Easter religiously or just enjoy the festivities, it’s one of the world’s favourite and most widely-varied holiday seasons. For some it means fasting and fish, while for others it’s all about (expensive!) show-bags and chocolate eggs. Delivery Hero shares some of the interesting Easter traditions and food that different cultures use to celebrate this special time of year:

Spanish Easter Traditions

It’s widely known that the Spanish know how to party, and that belief is confirmed by their cheerful Holy Thursday Easter tradition known as the ‘Dance of the Dead’. “Forget bunny rabbits”, say the Spaniards – the best way to revere the Lord is to play out scenes from ‘The Passion’ (not the Mel Gibson movie) with everyone dressed up as skeletons while parading through the town. At some point someone must have mentioned that dressing up as the living dead wasn’t reverent enough, so they make sure that the animated corpses carry boxes of ashes and dance for 3 hours into the early morning (Sydney-siders might know this tradition as ‘a night in Kings Cross’). Easter Feast-er

That’s right, terrible puns and all it is almost Easter time! The one of many historically religious holidays in Australia, that has been hijacked in modern times and transformed into a weekend of food worshipping.

Easter egg hunt

The very same holiday which leaves us all scratching our heads wondering how chocolate eggs relate to the resurrection and how images of bunny’s and baby animals relate to our now encroaching Autumn.

Still, this is not to say some of our Easter traditions aren’t enormous amounts of fun. Following the Easter bunny’s trail and searching for the chocolate stash before your sibling’s steal it all-was always the highlight of Easter Sunday for me.

So to celebrate the spirit of the great Easter egg hunt, we have put our own DH spin on things.

Take a look at the map of Sydney CBD and follow the trail to lead you to some of the tastiest Restaurants offering home delivery in the city.

What is in a name? The pun-tastic world of restaurant names

From the perspective of a restaurateur, naming your establishment is a tricky thing. Do you go for something that tells people the style of food you’re serving and where it is? what about a pop culture reference? or just something that sounds cool? or do you go for the pun?

Many restaurant and cafe owners choose the straightforward option. Marrickville Thai & Seafood is a case in point. As customers, there’s no confusion about what kind of food the restaurant serves and where it is. This can definitely make it easier if you’re trying to organise a night out with friends.

Another popular choice is to give your establishment a person’s name, like Annie’s Restaurant or Micky’s Cafe. It doesn’t matter whether this person is real or fictional, a name like that just sounds friendly and inviting – “See you at Micky’s!”. (more…)

Tacocopter – The Future of Food Delivery?

Over the past couple of days the web has been abuzz about a revolutionary method for fast-food delivery – the Tacocopter. If you haven’t heard the news, or you’ve been living under a rock that doesn’t have internet access, it’s no wonder that the concept has made people very excited.

tacocopter - the future of food delivery

Let’s get real, who hasn’t ever felt a rumble in their belly and secretly wished that a delicious taco would fall from the heavens? Right? Well, some next-level geniuses over in San Francisco have heard the prayers of millions and delivered the future of food delivery to the world – or have they?

Tacocopter is supposed to work like this: You place an order via their slick-looking website, type in your address and wait for the food drone to arrive. Food drone? Yep. Looking like something out of Terminator 2, the Tacocopter may someday wage a relentless war on humanity, but until then it is also perfectly suited to flying delicious Mexican home delivery around the neighbourhood.

The Tacocopter almost sounds too good to be true and, unfortunately, that seems out to be the case. After doing some digging around, the boffins over at Wired magazine decided to track down the founder of Tacocopter, Star Simpson to get some more details about the business. Heartbreak ensued: (more…)

Gourmet Food vs Cheap Eats: the price of happiness

What’s the most expensive thing you’ve ever eaten?

For me it would have to be a tie between meals at Rockpool & Tetsuya’s. Both were outlandishly pricey, truly delicious and impeccably presented – but were they the best meals I had ever eaten? More to the point – does price equal pleasure?

I can say that elements of both meals were at the top of my all-time list – or at least very close contenders. I still haven’t had a plate of fresh Sushi & Sashimi that can contend with the silky-smooth first course at Neil Perry’s Rockpool, and the Bread & Butter Pudding at Tetsuya’s turned a seemingly simple dish into a creamy revelation of gorgeous, subtle awesomeness.

Still, think about those nights when absolutely nothing will satisfy your craving like a big, simple serving of steaming Spaghetti Bolognese, or when you could be presented with a $500 degustation menu but would still prefer a home delivery of Thai Beef Salad with a side of sticky Jasmine Rice? We’ve all had (massive) nights where nothing can beat a simple Meat Pie with Tomato Sauce (half of which somehow manages to end up down the front of your shirt…), or those Sunday mornings when the only way to soothe your throbbing headache is a cornerstore Hamburger with the Lot  ;) (more…)
