What’s the most expensive thing you’ve ever eaten?
For me it would have to be a tie between meals at Rockpool & Tetsuya’s. Both were outlandishly pricey, truly delicious and impeccably presented – but were they the best meals I had ever eaten? More to the point – does price equal pleasure?
I can say that elements of both meals were at the top of my all-time list – or at least very close contenders. I still haven’t had a plate of fresh Sushi & Sashimi that can contend with the silky-smooth first course at Neil Perry’s Rockpool, and the Bread & Butter Pudding at Tetsuya’s turned a seemingly simple dish into a creamy revelation of gorgeous, subtle awesomeness.
Still, think about those nights when absolutely nothing will satisfy your craving like a big, simple serving of steaming Spaghetti Bolognese, or when you could be presented with a $500 degustation menu but would still prefer a home delivery of Thai Beef Salad with a side of sticky Jasmine Rice? We’ve all had (massive) nights where nothing can beat a simple Meat Pie with Tomato Sauce (half of which somehow manages to end up down the front of your shirt…), or those Sunday mornings when the only way to soothe your throbbing headache is a cornerstore Hamburger with the Lot
