State of Origin Survival Pack

State of Origin Game One is around the corner, and preparations are in full swing. New South Welshman are starting to breathe a little quicker, hoping that their motley crew of first-timers will be enough to staunch the flow of series wins leaking steadily up north thanks to Mal Meninga and his Avenger-like team of superheroes.

While tens-of-thousands of people watch the game live in the stands of Etihad Stadium, and a few million more watch from the comfort of their own homes, you can be sure that the Australian Pie & Sausage Roll industry will see a huge spike in sales, which is fair enough as it’s practically the national cuisine.

If you’re entertaining at home and you’ve invited the boys around for a biggy, you’re probably gonna line up some coldies to go with the tucker, so you don’t want to find yourself running out of food halfway through the game and not being able to get some more. The best way to make sure you’re all set is to order in a forward-pack sized selection of home delivery, so Delivery Hero has decided to do the hard yards for you by putting together a State of Origin Survival pack for Game One! Best Beers to Drink with Takeaway Food

For centuries foodies and gourmands have taken great pleasure in pairing the finest wines with the most exquisite cuisines, and no wonder – a complimentary drop can add a whole new level of flavour and body to a meal. But what about beer? With boutique breweries popping up in virtually every area of the world, it’s about time that we started taking the amber fluid seriously as a way to enhance the flavours of a delicious dining experience, so Delivery Hero has done the (naturally) heroic thing and come up with a list of the best Australian beers to match with takeaway cuisine from around the world!

Best Beers to drink with takeaways

Type of Takeaway – Thai

Restaurant – @Home Thai

Cuisine – Pad Thai   A favourite Thai fried Rice Noodle with Egg, Tofu, Bean Sprouts & Peanuts

Type of Beer – Pilsner

Boutique Beer option – Hix Pilsner   Hix Pilsner is a German-style pilsener made from both local and imported malted grains. It has a subtle aroma, a light bready / cracker-like taste and a dash of bitterness and floral flavours. Add in a high-level of carbonation and this is a perfect brew for a Pad Thai.

Mainstream Beer option – Coopers 62 Pilsner   The Coopers 62 brings a golden colour and dense, rich head. Hopped using a combo of Saaz and Hersbrucker varieties, the flavour is medium-bodied and the 62 is well-fermented to produce a nicely balanced pilsner that sits next to a plate of Pad Thai like they were meant to be together. In and Out Thai Noodle Bar: A Love Affair

It began innocently as these things often do, with empty cupboards and a craving for something delicious yet comforting to take my hunger pangs away. As a busy woman who loves her food but has little time to cook, I’d ordered my fair share of takeaway cuisine and had been more or less satisfied with the results. And then In and Out Noodle Bar happened. I had found ‘The One’.

Tom Kha kicked things off, the fragrance of aromatic ingredients filling the air as I savoured the mellowing effect a dash of coconut milk brings to this famous sweet, salty and sour Thai soup.  Next I dove into a Chicken Larb and, expecting the same straight forward combination of mince chicken and herbs, I was unprepared for the delightful hit of lime and authentic roasted rice which crunched pleasantly between my teeth, lifting the dish to a higher plane.  Alternating between this, fluffy Jasmine rice and a holy basil and chilli vegetable stir fry aka Pad Kra Prao, I felt a pang of regret that I hadn’t discovered this gem of culinary Thai delights sooner. What is in a name? The pun-tastic world of restaurant names

From the perspective of a restaurateur, naming your establishment is a tricky thing. Do you go for something that tells people the style of food you’re serving and where it is? what about a pop culture reference? or just something that sounds cool? or do you go for the pun?

Many restaurant and cafe owners choose the straightforward option. Marrickville Thai & Seafood is a case in point. As customers, there’s no confusion about what kind of food the restaurant serves and where it is. This can definitely make it easier if you’re trying to organise a night out with friends.

Another popular choice is to give your establishment a person’s name, like Annie’s Restaurant or Micky’s Cafe. It doesn’t matter whether this person is real or fictional, a name like that just sounds friendly and inviting – “See you at Micky’s!”. (more…)

We’re on a mission to find the best laksa and we need YOUR help!

As you can imagine, in the Delivery Hero office, we’re a little obsessed with food. These borderline fanatical tendencies mean that no-one holds back. Seriously. There are huge debates about which dish is the ultimate – is it Pad Thai or a simple oven-fired Marguerita pizza with a hand-made crust? Opinions fly hard and fast, and everyone gets a little bit passionate about championing their local.

Best Laksa Competition

One dish that’s been causing a bit of a stir is laksa. Everyone’s an aficionado and has their hole-in-the-wall, secret laksa dealer. (more…)

Summer Menu Ideas: Thai Space Glebe

Sydney’s rainy start to summer can’t help but remind us at Delivery Hero of tropical Thailand. Hot and humid with delicious cooking smells in the air. When it comes to summer menu ideas, we’re the first to head for Thai takeaway dishes because really nothing beats super fresh vegetables and herbs mixed with that spicy chilli kick. Thai Space in Glebe is definitely the place to be for a quick Thai fix. Of course Thai is the perfect meal to share with friends and family out in the backyard, or why not take this mini feast with you for an evening picnic in Jubilee park?

Summer food ideas - Thai

For starters a mixed entree of money bags, curry puffs and spring rolls and Thai fish cakes is a surefire way to get your Thai on. But for something a little more exotic, who can go past duck pancakes? Seriously, if you haven’t tried these, you really haven’t lived. And if you want to be picky about it’s origins, yes the Thai have borrowed this recipe from China, but hey, it’s a winner. Take strips of BBQ’d Peking duck, cucumber, shallots, sprinkle with Hoi Sin sauce and wrap it up in a Mandarin pancake.

While some of us here in the Delivery Hero office will be heading straight for the stir fries and curries (it’s never too humid for a green curry!) – others in the mood for something lighter would definitely recommend a Thai salad. In addition to regular Thai beef salad, Thai Space in Glebe do a super tasty Calamari and Lemon Salad with lemon grass, chilli, garlic, fresh ginger and mint leaves. Its a tangy taste bud sensation.

Considering that Sydney summer is all about seafood, Thai Space takes advantage of that with their delicious Salt and Pepper Calamari, and Tamarind King Prawn and vegetable dish. But if seafood isn’t your thing, you can’t go wrong with a Chicken with Cashew Nut stir fry, or everyone’s favourite, the classic Pad Thai.

While we’ve got a soft spot for Thai delivery here at Delivery Hero and hope that these suggestions will whet your appetite, if you head to the website, you’ll realise that the summer menu options are pretty much infinite.
